FRANCIS’ APOSTOLIC JOURNEY TO THAILAND AND JAPAN
From 19 to 26 November Pope Francis made his thirty-second apostolic journey – the seventh in 2019 – to Thailand and Japan.
This journey follows his previous Asian journeys to Korea (2014), Sri Lanka and the Philippines (2015), and in Myanmar and Bangladesh (2017).
Our director, a member of the papal retinue, recounts the journey in its stages, highlighting the meanings of the events and speeches and their context. In particular, some fundamental themes emerge from the narrative: the dialogue between religions, the need for inculturation, the enhancement of the roots, the commitment to “raise our voice” for peace, the condemnation of the possession of nuclear weapons, the care of the “common home”, the need for a less competitive and more supportive society.
It is worth noting, in particular, the insistence on the theme of “human brotherhood”.
