A “PROBABLE SYNOD” OF THE ITALIAN CHURCH?
From the first ecclesial conference in 1976, to the present day
A debate is underway on the appropriateness of a Synod of the Italian Church. In it reference was made to First National Ecclesial Conference on «Evangelization and Human Promotion» (Rome 1976).
Despite the universally positive judgment on that Conference, its main demands – «synodality» and «missionary conversion» – were not welcomed.
The Author – a former director of La Civiltà Cattolica – argues that a simple Conference is not enough to achieve synodality and missionary conversion, which are the same objectives of Francis’ pontificate.
A Synod is necessary, not just to confront the serious challenges currently not only the Country, but the Church’s evangelizing mission itself.
