‘SENTINELS OF FRATERNITY IN THE NIGHT’.
The apostolic journey of Pope Francis to Abu Dhabi
Pope Francis traveled to the United Arab Emirates, February 3-5, 2019, his first trip to the Arabian Peninsula.
The occasion for the visit was the International Convention on Fraternity promoted by the Islamic Council of the Elderly. During the visit, the pope and the Grand Imam of al-Azhar signed a document on “Human Fraternity for World Peace and Coexistence.” Together with a report on the encounter, our director – who participated in the trip as a member of the Vatican delegation – proposes here a brief commentary on the Document.
He highlights how the recognition of fraternity is both a strong message of religious value, but is also political: it is not by chance that the Document leads to a reflection on the meaning of citizenship.
