“La Civiltà Cattolica” ENGLISH Edition
La Civiltà Cattolica in English is the fruit of a partnership between its Rome based editors and managers and the Asian Catholic news and feature service, UCA News.
For La Civiltà Cattolica, the English edition is one of four versions of the publication – the other three are in Spanish, French and Korean – launched at the time the 4000th edition in Italian was published (9 February, 2017).
It is in the tradition of Jesuit publications across the world and in many languages that provide a venue for Christian faith and the cultures it is planted in to engage and interact.
La Civiltà Cattolica is a venerable publication of the Italian Jesuits given to them to publish by Pope Pius IX. It is now available in all digital forms and is a presence on social media platforms.
UCA News (UCAN) is a digital multilingual and multimedia news and feature publisher at the service of the Church in Asia. Its reports cover topics of interest and relevance to the Church’s mission in Asia.
UCAN also has the editing and production skills to render in English information created in other languages, most often Asian languages. It also has the marketing capacity to reach the Church worldwide and has readers in 180 countries.
The partnership between La Civiltà Cattolica is founded on both intersecting missions and also capacities that complement each other.
LA CIVILTÀ CATTOLICA
LA CIVILTÀ CATTOLICA is a publishing project given to the Jesuits by Pope Pius IX in 1850, during a time of convulsive change in Europe.
One of the oldest, continuously published Catholic journals, the fortnightly review has always aimed to provide deeper assessments of topics and events of broad significance.
It is “high popular” in tone and reach but not specialist in character. While its treatment of topics will often run over 5,000 words, the periodical is for the educated and searching reader rather than being a professional journal.
All authors are Jesuits and all articles have been viewed and approved by an official of the Vatican’s Secretariat of State before publication. For this reason, La Civiltà Cattolica has always been a widow into what thoughts, policies and priorities are alive in the Apostolic See.
La Civiltà Cattolica in English is published monthly – 12 editions and 1440 pages of articles annually. Its articles, commentaries and reflections focus on theological, philosophical, moral, historical, political, social and literary topics. The content is divided in sections for documents, profiles and interviews, the life of the Church and commentaries. The content provides reading for an informed Catholic conscience that is better able to decide freely.
Today, as it has since its foundation, La Civiltà Cattolica aims to read and interpret the history, politics, culture, science and art in the light of the Christian faith as proposed by the Magisterium of the Church.
The periodical particularly wants to create – patiently and humbly – a dialogue between Christian faith and contemporary culture, as called for by the Second Vatican Council. All this occurs while La Civiltà Cattolica maintains a special relationship with the Holy See. Being in tune with the Holy See is part of the identity of La Civiltà Cattolica along with a special bond to the Pope.
Pope Francis has call La Civiltà Cattolica “one of a kind.”
As a magazine of general reference, articles in La Civiltà Cattolica are written and edited in a way that has the educated though non-specialist reader in mind. Discussions in the periodical are rigorous and well researched but always aim to be open and accessible.
